Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Rooted in Christ, Growing in Love”
By Fr. Tom Lanza – Pastor, St. Matthias Parish & School

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the wonderful community of St. Matthias for the warm and gracious welcome you offered me last weekend. From the kind words after Mass to the smiles, handshakes, and genuine hospitality, I felt immediately at home. Your faith, generosity, and deep love for this parish are truly inspiring, and I am grateful to begin this journey with you. I look forward to all that God has in store for us as we grow together in faith and service.

As we move through these summer days and prepare for the school year, I’m reminded of the words of St. Paul to the Colossians: “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17). At St. Matthias Parish and School, our mission is to nurture faith, hope, and love—not only in our church, but also across every corner of our campus. That mission continues to take shape in visible and tangible ways this summer.

Good news!  And lots to share…

First, we are giving our school cafeteria a much-needed refresh with a fresh coat of paint. This space is more than just a room where children eat; it is a place of friendship, laughter, and nourishment—both physical and spiritual. Which is why we are going to add inspirational Bible Verses to the wall with stenciled sticker lettering. By improving the appearance of the space, we are affirming the dignity of our students, guiding their faith, and creating a more welcoming environment for the many events and meals shared there.

Secondly, we are beginning to beautify our grounds by mulching flowerbeds and removing weeds from the parking lot. These efforts may seem small, but they speak volumes. As stewards of God’s creation, we are called to care for our environment. Just as the Lord walked in the Garden of Eden in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8), we too want our parish grounds to reflect the peace and beauty of God’s presence.

Lastly, we are also working to replace our aging school playground, the fencing, and add benches. This playground has served generations of children. We are dreaming of a safe, joyful space where future students can laugh, play, learn, and grow together.

All of these projects reflect a deeper spiritual truth: the Church is not just bricks and mortar, but a living body, where all are welcome. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:9. As we build and restore our physical space, we also renew our commitment to building up the Body of Christ here in Somerset.

Let us continue to cultivate a spirit of gratitude for our community as we begin this journey together. May the Lord bless the work of our hands and the love in our hearts that makes St. Matthias so special.

In peace,

Fr. Tom Lanza
