Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A Heart of Gratitude

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This past week, we came together as a parish family to celebrate the beautiful Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this solemnity, we honor Mary’s faithful “yes” to God, her life of humble service, and the glory she now shares in heaven. It is a reminder to each of us that our ultimate goal is to be united with Christ, and that along the way, our acts of love, sacrifice, and service have eternal value.

As I reflect on this feast, I cannot help but think of the many people here at St. Matthias Parish and School who quietly and faithfully live out that same spirit of service and devotion. Like Mary, so many of you offer your “yes” to God in ways that are unseen by the world but deeply felt within our community.

To our school faculty and staff, you embody a vocation of love and formation. You not only teach academics but model Christian values, shaping the minds and hearts of our students. Whether in the classroom, the office, the cafeteria, or the maintenance department, your daily work is a reflection of the Gospel lived out in real time. I am deeply grateful for your dedication, especially as we prepare for the new school year.

To our parish staff—you are the hands and feet that keep this church alive with organization and warmth. From answering calls with a kind voice to ensuring the church is administratively functioning well, your work often goes unnoticed by many, but it is a vital part of our mission.

To the countless ministry groups—PPC, liturgical ministers, lectors, altar servers, ushers, choir members, catechists, outreach volunteers, prayer groups, Knights of Columbus, and so many others—you bring life to our parish through your talents and commitment. Whether enhancing our prayer at Mass, serving our community, decorating the sanctuary, or visiting the sick, you remind us that the Church is not just a building, but a living body of believers.

To all of our faithful parishioners—thank you for showing up. Thank you for your prayers, your generosity, your willingness to pitch in, and your love for the Lord and His Church. Whether you’ve been here for decades or just joined us recently, you are an essential part of our St. Matthias family.

Mary’s Assumption reminds us that God honors faithfulness. She was taken body and soul into heaven because she gave her whole life to Him. In your own way, each of you mirrors that same trust in God’s plan by giving of your time, energy, and heart to His work here.

Let us keep our eyes fixed on the example of our Blessed Mother. She never sought recognition—only to serve the Lord faithfully. May we do the same, knowing that every act of love, no matter how small, is seen by God and has eternal worth

With a heart full of gratitude,

Fr. Tom Lanza
